Below are the team’s updates for end of week 13 of 2026. First, as always, let’s introduce the fantastic team and what we’re building.
The Team
The Observability Core team at Canonical consists of Jose, Sina, Mike, and Leon (Manager).
Together with the Tracing and Profiling and Service Mesh teams, we form the full Observability team, managed by Simme.
Our goal is to provide you with the best open-source observability stack possible, turning your day-2 operations into smooth sailing.
The Work
Charmed otelcol now also supports logs, traces over the otlp relation
@sinap updated how the charm handles the otlp integration to enable flow of logs and metrics over the otlp integration (#219, #220). OTLP endpoints were also added to the terraform module (#196).
Generic alert rules over the otlp relation
@crucible enabled generic alert rules for otelcol over the otlp relation in #383. This also makes our most frequently updated library in the charmlibs repo.
Use otelcol to export telemetry to non-charmed backends
@jose demonstrated in an otelcol itest how to forward telemetry from otelcol to a non-charmed rsyslog server.
Add admin_roles, editor_roles config options Grafana charm (#502)
Per request from Weii, now users with “admin” oauth role can edit dashboards. Thanks to @nsklikas and @shipperizer for the guidance and testing!
cos-config fix for proxied envs
@sinap added a charm config option for known_hosts to avoid needing ssh keyscan, which fails behind proxy (#154).
Separate otelcol dashboards for the k8s and vm charms
The otelcol dashboards will now clearly indicate in their title if they are for the k8s (here) or the vm (here) charm. This fix by @sinap also fixed a bug where we mistakenly had the same UID for both dashboards. This fix was cherry-picked intro track/2.
