Introducing paas-charm 2.0
Hello fellow charmers!!
We have exciting news! As some of you know we have been working on paas-charm 2.0 this cycle and finally it is time to share it with you!
paas-charm 2.0 brings a new Ubuntu LTS foundation (resolute
), more flexible observability, remapping env vars, custom relations support, and improved secret management to 12-factor applications deployed with Juju.
What’s new?
-
Built for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. Updated framework profiles and extensions provide the new foundation, with generated charms running as non-root by default and framework rocks providing a writable /app-data directory.
-
More control over application and metrics endpoints. Configure application ports, metrics ports, and metrics paths through paas-config.yaml. Add custom Prometheus scrape jobs alongside the framework’s built-in job.
-
Improved secret management. Generated application keys are now stored in Juju secrets and can be rotated with the rotate-secret-key action. A unified app-secret-key option lets you supply your own Juju secret across frameworks.
-
Updated tooling and integrations. New Ubuntu 26.04 charm projects use uv for dependency management, while OAuth, OpenFGA, and tracing integrations move to maintained charmlibs interfaces.
-
Custom relations. Now you can easily add your own relations using our developer api.
-
Env var customization. Now you can map config options to environment variables freely.
Upgrading
paas-charm 2.0 is a major release and requires a manual migration, including rebuilding your rocks and charms for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. Review the migration instructions before refreshing existing deployments: application keys are regenerated during upgrade, which may invalidate user sessions.
See the paas-charm 2.0 release notes for details.
See the tutorials for our supported frameworks.
Note: This is still experimental and we would appreciate your feedback.
